UPCOMING! Neutral Milk Hotel at l'Olympia

UPCOMING! Neutral Milk Hotel at l'Olympia  | Wednesday January 18th

It was in 1999 that weird folk band Neutral Milk Hotel disbanded, one short year after the release of that masterpiece of an album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. These were sad news for fans, especially given the fact that no other band really sounds like these guys. The departure of such a strange and odd-sounding animal from the music world tends to leave a cultural gap.

There is a strong experimental edge to this band’s oeuvre, which is at times folk, at times a tad heavier. The lyrics are gems of poetic genius, they are casual verses full of beautifully written stories or semi-philosophical thoughts – “How strange it is to be anything at all!” – they flow effortlessly on top of a wide variety of folk ambiances, ranging from sole acoustic guitar ballads to pieces entirely supported by accordions. The whole package is a quite gorgeous brand of folk that lean towards utterly catchy rock from time to time.

It was indeed very sad to see them go in ’99.

But hey, times change. In 2011, Neutral Milk Hotel released an EP titled Ferris Wheel on Fire, featuring new versions of songs from previous albums, as well as never-before-released pieces.

Wait a minute… Are you guys back together?

Earlier this year, the band answered by announcing a tour, which begins tomorrow in New Zealand. POP asked them to stop by Montreal’s very own l’Olympia on January 18th, 2014. Awesome.

Now, I must ask... Guys, when is that next album coming?

Please note: the YouTube link below is not a video, but it is nevertheless one hell of a song.
