UPCOMING! Woodkid at Metropolis

UPCOMING! Woodkid at Metropolis  | Thursday October 17th

Before being the talented musician and songwriter who got lots of music fans out there interested, Woodkid was a music video director. His resume contains work he’s done fore Katy Perry, Lana Del Rey, Taylor Swift… Lots of pop stuff. One would think that, perhaps, his decision to take on the role of the performer might have been inspired by divas with whom he has been working over the course of his career.

He, in fact, makes pretty damn tasty music, miles away from his employers’ bland pop. If it bears some resemblance to pop as a whole, it nevertheless remains another animal entirely. It could be described as a very beat-driven form of pop rock, with a healthy dose of grandiose horns and just enough synths. It sounds like the final scene of a fantastic movie, kind of.

However, I might just be saying that because of the absolutely astonishing videos that accompany his songs. They are black and white shorts full of super slow-motion shots of crazy things, such as Viking-helmet-bearing children and powdery meteors falling from the sky. The cinematography is flawless and serves as a great visual vehicle for the music, in the most epic of ways.

Video considerations asides, this Frenchy (born in Lyon, it seems) has an eloquent musical voice, to which it is worth devoting some of your music geekness. His first LP has been out for a few months now, and because of it, he is enjoying a fair amount of momentum at the moment. Believe me when I say that it is not for nothing. He is going to stop by Metropolis on October 17th. Don’t miss your chance!
