UPCOMING! Crocodiles at Divan Orange

UPCOMING! Crocodiles at Divan Orange  |  Wednesday November 20th

Remember hearing about a San Diego band named Crocodiles? I bet you have, but maybe not for the reason you think. Brandon Welchez’s and Charles Rowell’s project was in the news when they put out a song titled “Kill Joe Arpaio”. For those of you who might not know, the man whose name inspired the title is Arizona’s corrupt, narcissistic, and racist sheriff (believe me, I weigh my words when I say that) of Maricopa County, Arizona, the very one who’s well known for his Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act (you know, the “I can arrest you just for looking Mexican” law).

But beyond the racist-sheriff-related headlines, Crocodiles deserves a mention for their inspired music. The latter is a blend of garage-flavoured rock and weightless dreampop, in that it includes driven, gritty grooves, but also airy, reverby vocals. At its dirtiest, the band sounds a little bit like the ones that made the glory of the late 70s punk era, and at the shoegaze end of the continuum, they sound like a raunchy version of modern-day pop rock acts. Their latest album, Crimes of Passion, is their 4th LP (not bad for a band formed in 2009), and was produced by Raveonettes’ Sune Rose Wagner. If features a few cool collaborations, including Cat Power’s Gregg Foreman.

They will be at Divan Orange on November 20th. Not missing it is probably the best the thing to do. The Fresh & Only’s Wymond Miles will be soloing it to open things up.
