UPCOMING! CocoRosie at S.A.T.

UPCOMING! CocoRosie at S.A.T.  | Monday October 14th

When they’re not busy working on their magazine titled GAG (Girls Against God), which they describe as an endeavour that “deploys the arts to illuminate the oppressive, obsolete nature of traditional, male-defined religions and other patriarchal institutions”, the two sisters who form CocoRosie make some pretty damn great music.

These two high school dropouts grew up in an array of towns and were raised by an artist and singer, the sort of life parameters that have the potential to give birth to compelling art. In the case of these two amazing weirdos, the potential bloomed into a very real affair, one that involved recording a debut album in a Paris bathroom, turning children toys and electronic gadgets into legit instruments, incorporating a beatboxer in their roster, and countless other gleeful things.

The fruit of the work of this duo of astonishing artists is a blend of melancholic folk, synth-based indie-rock, longing poetry, moving storytelling, with a dash of hip hop thrown in for good measure. The melodies often steal the show, but some of their pieces are also very beat-driven (which got a lot of electronic music producers excited about remixing their songs). Five albums later, the two musicians have acquired enough experience to add a substantial amount of depth to their ever-blooming oeuvre. If you want to know what I mean by that, listen to Tales of GrassWidow, the album that they just put out.

The two sisters are currently traveling with their band to promote this fresh new record, and they shall stop by S.A.T. on October 14th to deliver the music that it contains to the Montreal public.
